This is a communication (without detailed proofs) of results that will appear elsewhere. The setting is an infinite dimensional paracompact space X. Given a continuous family \({\mathcal F}=\{F_ x\}\), \(x\in X\), of Fredholm operators, infinite dimensional cycles \(\chi^*_{q,p}({\mathcal F})=\{x\in X|\) dim ker \(F^*_ x\geq p\}\), p-q \(=\) the numerical index of \({\mathcal F}\), are defined. They are non-trivial for Dirac operators (a result of Atiyah-Jones). The author deals with subcycles of \(\chi^*_{q,p}\) called kernel cycles, arising from the families of solutions of the operators \(F_ x\). He gives an estimate for them from below, by other cycles, so called index cycles, determined by the index of the family \({\mathcal F}.\) It is shown that the index cycles are non-trivial for Dirac operators.
