    For a Banach space E and a subspace \(U\subseteq E\) consider the following value [see \textit{H. König}, \textit{D. R. Lewis}, and \textit{P.-K. Lin}, Stud. Math. 75, 341-358 (1983; Zbl 0529.46013)] \[ \lambda (U,E):=\inf \{\| P\|:\;P: E\to U\text{ is a projection}\}. \] Let X be compact, \(f\in C(X)\); V be a subspace of C(X) and \(\nu\in V\) be a best uniform approximation to \(f\in C(X)\). The largest constant \(\gamma >0\) satisfying \(\| f-w\| \geq \| f-\nu \| +\gamma \| \nu -w\|\) for all \(w\in V\) is called the strong uniqueness constant \(\gamma\) (f). The paper gives an upper estimate for \(\gamma\) (f) by the relation \(\lambda (V_{E(x)},C(E(r)))\) on \(\lambda\) (V,C(X)), where \(E(r):=\{x\in X:| r(x)| =\| r\| \}\). A corollary is obtained which expands the result of \textit{H. P. Blatt} [Approximation theory and spline functions, Proc. NATO Adv. Study Inst., St. John's/Newfoundland 1983, NATO ASI Ser., Ser. C 136, 23-63 (1984; Zbl 0553.90085)].
