In 1973, G. A. Freiman stated the following result: If \(m\in \{2,3,...\}\) and \(2\leq \lambda <2^ m\) then there are positive numbers \(c=c(m,\lambda)\) and \(n_ 0=n_ 0(m,\lambda)\) such that, for every finite subset X of \({\mathbb{R}}^ m\) for which \(| X| >n_ 0\), if \(| X+X| \leq \lambda | X|\) then \(| H\cap X| \geq c| X|\) for some hyperplane H in \({\mathbb{R}}^ m.\) The author refers to Freiman's proof of his result as somewhat difficult to understand and suggests that the result be regarded as a claim, i.e. something between a conjecture and a theorem. He then proceeds to offer a different proof to that of Freiman, for the case \(m=2\), of a slightly sharpened form of the result which omits the role played by \(n_ 0\).
