The paper starts from the idea that an ``integral'' form of the description of dynamical systems is given by the dynamics of attainability sets; it allows to calculate optimal controls and trajectories and also to study qualitative problems including the existence of optimal controls. The main problems considered here are the topological properties of attainability sets on large time intervals.
