Let R be a commutative ring with unity and \(T_ n(R)\) the R-algebra of upper triangular \(n\times n\) matrices over R. \textit{G. P. Barker} and the author [The automorphism group of a matrix algebra. Current trends in matrix theory (Auburn, Alar, 1986), 33-39 (1987)] stated that every R- algebra automorphism of \(T_ n(R)\) is inner provided R is an integral domain. In \textit{I. M. Isaacs}' review (1988; MR 88h:16029) of the cited result was mentioned that the proof was in error and also suggested that the hypothesis that R is an integral domain probably could be weakened or perhaps eliminated altogether. In this note the author simultaneously corrects the error and proves that for any commutative ring R with unity, every R-algebra automorphism of \(T_ n(R)\) is inner, thereby confirming the accuracy of Isaacs' conjecture.
