Some results concerning the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions of certain scalar recursions which have been studied by \textit{H. F. Weinberger} [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 13, 353-396 (1982; Zbl 0529.92010)] are generalized to the system \(u^ i_{n+1}=Q^ i[u_ n]\) \((i=1,...,k)\) of recursions where Q is a certain vector operator being defined for vector-valued functions. It is shown that (if certain assumptions are satisfied) the vector \(u_ n\) finally propagates with a speed \(c^*(e)\) in the direction of the unit vector e as n tends towards infinity. Applications of the results are published in the second part, see the following review, Zbl 0706.92015.
