Take n elements from an algebra A, form their product, then apply the Young symmetrizer corresponding to the totally antisymmeric representation of the symmetric group on n symbols. The multilinear function, so defined, is termed the standard polynomial of degree n and denoted \(F_ n\). The algebra A is said to be an \(F_ n\)-algebra if \(F_ n\) is identically zero. The main result in this paper is that an \(F_ n\)-algebra which satisfies a certain maximality condition is isomorphic to an algebra of matrices with entries belonging to the centre of A. The result is relevant to the theory of singular integral operators.
