In ``Dehn surgery on a satellite knot'' [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 275, 687- 708 (1983; Zbl 0519.57005)] \textit{C. McA. Gordon} provides a number of examples where some integral surgery on a satellite knot yields a lens space. The paper presently under review establishes that these examples form a complete list of satellite knots on which rational surgery can be performed so as to obtain a 3-manifold with cyclic fundamental group. To be more precise, the following Theorem is observed. Theorem: Suppose K is a satellite knot and \(r\in {\mathbb{Q}}\). Let (K;r) denote the 3-manifold obtained by performing r-surgery on K. Then \(\pi_ 1((K;r))\) is cyclic if and only if K is a \((2,2pq\pm 1)\)-cable of a (p,q)-torus knot and \(r=4pq\pm 1\). Under these circumstances, (K;r) is the lens space \(L(4pq\pm 1,4q^ 2).\) Besides Gordon's contribution, the proof of this Theorem employs results of Litherland, Gabai and Haken as well as Culler, Gordon, Luecke and Shalen.
