This article deals with exponential sums involving both multiplicative and additive characters. For a general exponential sum, we establish bounds on the degree of the associated L-function. In addition, if the L- function is nicely behaved, we give an estimate for the p-adic size of its reciprocal roots. These results are expressed in terms of the Newton polyhedron of the Laurent polynomial appearing in the exponential sum.
