The authors develop an abstract theory of semi-Carleman operators in Riesz spaces. To some extent their approach is similar to the case when an abstract theory of Carleman operators was developed by the first author and \textit{P. van Eldik} in Indag. Math. 45, 421-433 (1983; Zbl 0528.47020).
