Let M be a three-dimensional contact manifold with metric g and contact form \(\eta\). Denote: \(\xi =\#\eta\), \(\phi =\) the complex structure of the contact distribution \(\eta =0\), \(Q=\) the Ricci operator of g. The main results of the paper are that the commutation \(Q\phi =\phi Q\) is equivalent to the \(\eta\)-Einstein property, and that, if this commutation holds, M is either Sasakian flat or of constant \(\xi\)-sectional curvature \(k<1\) and constant \(\phi\)-sectional curvature -k. Several other geometric results concerning such manifolds are also included.
