Let F be any field and n and r integers at least 2. The author characterizes in particular all subgroups H of GL(nr,F) containing \(N=SL(n,F)\otimes SL(r,F)\). The general situation is that N or SL(nr,F) is normal in H. There are then a number of special cases in characteristic two. The author then carries out a similar operation, using symplectic instead of special linear groups.
