The authors prove that every two-dimensional manifold carries a \(C^ 2\) diffeomorphism with infinitely many Axiom A strange attractors. By an Axiom A strange attractor is meant a strange attractor which can be obtained as an attractor of some Axiom A diffeomorphisms. This paper builds on work of John Franks, Lai Sang Young, and Bob Williams. Using standard surgery techniques, it suffices to prove the theorem in the case where the manifold is a closed 2-disk. This is then done by an explicit construction.
