Let G be a reductive group over Z, let F be a field and let G(F) be the group of F-points of G. For example, if F is R (resp., C, the p-adic field \(Q_ p\) or a finite field \(F_ q)\), then G(F) is GL(n,R) (resp., GL(n,C), \(GL(n,Q_ p)\), GL(n,q)). If G is a locally compact group, the reduced \(C^*\)-algebra is the \(C^*\)-algebra generated by the left regular representation of \(L^ 2(G).\) Now let F be a local field, let G be a connected reductive F group, and let G be the set of all rational points of G. Let M be a Levi subgroup of G. Let \(E_ 2(M)\) be the equivalence class of square integrable representations of M. For \(\sigma \not\in E_ 2(M)\), let \(\pi\) (\(\sigma\)) denote the representation of G unitarily induced from the extension of \(\sigma\) to the parabolic subgroup \(P=MN\). Let W(M) be the Weyl group defined as the normalizer of M in G modulo M. If \(\sigma\) is a unitary representation of M, define \((w\sigma)(x)=\sigma (yxy^{-1})\) for \(x\in M\) where \(w\in W(M)\) and y is a representation of w in G. Let D be an orbit of the group \(\Psi\) (M) of unramified unitary characters of M acting on \(E_ 2(M)\). Let W(M,D) be the stabilizer of D given by \(W(M,D)=\{w\in W(M)|\) \(w\cdot D=D\}\). One orbit is chosen in each W(M) orbit. Then the author proves a \(C^*\)-Plancherel theorem for reductive p-adic groups: The reduced \(C^*\)-algebra, \(C^*_ r(G)\) is a countable direct sum of algebras of the form \[ \{f\in C(D,k)| \quad f(w\sigma)=A(w,\sigma)f(\sigma)A(w,\sigma)^{-1}\text{ for all } w\in W(M,D)\} \] where the sum is extended over the different conjugacy classes. Here A(w,\(\sigma\)) are the normalized intertwining operators. Projections onto each of the components are determined by the partial Fourier transform \(\alpha_ D(\phi)(\sigma)=\pi (\sigma)(\phi)\) where \(\phi\) is a test function in \(C^*_ r(G)\) and \(\pi (\sigma)(\phi)=\int \phi (g)\pi (\sigma)(g)dg\). The author discusses several examples. In particular, if \(\pi\) (\(\sigma\)) is irreducible for all \(\sigma \in E_ 2(M)\), the author identifies the component algebras. The author also discusses the reduced tempered dual.
