This paper provides some insights concerning the underlying foundations of two classes of ethical poverty measures: one is a class of relative and the other a class of absolute measures of poverty. It is shown that these classes of indices can be axiomatized by using, among other properties, a replication invariance condition imposed on social evaluation functions.
