The author gives a probabilistic version of Medawar's derivation of the Gompertz biomass growth law for tissue growth. He obtains the Gompertz law in terms of the expectation of the logarithm of biomass and, under the assumption of zero measurement error, formulas for variance as well. He also shows how to analytically formulate and interpret Medawar's notion of ``growth energy''.
