Let X be a connected smooth \((2n-k)\)-manifold. We study in this paper the problem of whether or not a bordism class of \(MO_ n(X)\), \(MSO_ n(X)\) or \(\hat MSO_ n(X)\) contains an immersion. Here \(\hat MSO_ n(X)\) is the bordism group of maps from closed \(n\)-manifolds into \(X\) with oriented stable normal bundle, \(MO_ n(X)\) and \(MSO_ n(X)\) are usual bordism groups of maps from (un)oriented closed \(n\)-manifolds into X. Using the singularity method of Koschorke we define in the metastable range \(n\geq 2k-1\) a complete obstruction for the existence of an immersion in a given bordism class. In certain cases when \(k=2\) or 3 it is shown that this obstruction vanishes if and only if certain characteristic numbers are all zero.
