The authors strengthen a monotonicity theorem on an operator function due to one of the authors (Furuta) that is an extension of Furuta's inequality. For this purpose they use means of operators, and this enables them to provide an alternative proof of a result of \textit{T. Ando} on geometric mean [Math. Ann. 279, 157-159 (1987; Zbl 0613.47020)].
