The authors give an approach by use of the boundary element method to the identification of the unknown external force of a distributed parameter system determined by a nonhomogeneous partial differential equation of hyperbolic type. The method is based on boundary element partition, and the unknown external force is identified from state observations taken at the points on the boundary and by the use of the least squares approximations. The proposed method is illustrated by corresponding numerical examples.
