The author shows that a certain class of integral operators which was introduced by \textit{D. Colton} [J. Differ. Equations 26, 181-190 (1977; Zbl 0407.35043)] to transform solutions of the one-dimensional heat equation \(h_ t=h_{xx}\) into solutions of \(u_ t=u_{xx}+q(t,x)u\) can no longer be used, if the assumption ``q is analytic in t'' is replaced by ``q is \(C^{\infty}\) in t''. This is due to the fact that in the latter case the boundary value problem from whose solution the kernel of these operators is constructed need not have a solution.
