A program of realizing the structure of free compact groups is successively performed by the authors in some important directions [part II, cf. Topology Appl. 28, No.3, 215-231 (1988; Zbl 0638.22002)]. It is shown that the identity component of a free compact group is a semidirect factor of this group. A description of the projective cover PFX of the free compact group FX over a connected space X is given. This description enables to give a few estimates concerning the weight and the generating rank of the groups involved here.
