The author investigates invariant sets of area-preserving monotone twist maps of the cylinder. A result by \textit{J. N. Mather} [Commun. Math. Phys. 86, 465-473 (1982; Zbl 0553.58011)] is extended and a new criterion for the non-existence of invariant circles is given.
