The authors consider a nonclassical mathematical model of melting ice. Using the balance of energy to calculate temperatures they do not admit that energy storage e is proportional to the temperature u and that the flux \(\vec q\) is proportional to the gradient \(\nabla u\) as in the classical model (leading to the classical parabolic heat equation) but they allow e and \(\vec q\) to depend upon temperature history. This leads to the hyperbolic telegraphers equations for the temperature in regions taken by the water and ice, while the water fraction \(\xi\) in the partially frozen region is determined by an ordinary differential equation. These equations, as well as the equations for free surface (at \(u=0)\) in the water and ice, are considered together with some initial and boundary conditions. Some existence theorems for generalized solutions \((u\in W^{1,\infty}(0,T;L^ 2(G))\cap L^{\infty}(0,T;H^ 1_ 0(G))\), \(\xi \in L^{\infty}(\Omega)\); \(\Omega =G\times (0,T)\), \(G\subset {\mathbb{R}}^ m)\) of such formulated Stefan problem are given. The weak form of the Stefan problem and the one phase problem (leading to a variational inequality) are also treated.
