The authors give a summary of the results and conclusions of their papers SIAM J. Appl. Math. 48, No.6, 1396-1423 (1988; Zbl 0668.92014), and J. Math. Biol. 26, No.4, 361-374 (1988; Zbl 0717.92026), where a discrete- time model of populations that grow and disperse in separate phases is analyzed. The sedentary growth stage is described by a nonlinear operator and the dispersal stage is modelled by a linear integral operator. The main emphasis is on survival and extinction, the existence and stability of steady states and the comparison of various dispersion strategies in different environments.
