Dimension subgroups in characteristic \(p\) are employed in the study of the power structure of finite \(p\)-groups. For example, if \(G\) is a \(p\)-group, \(p\) odd, of class \(c\) and \(k\) is the smallest integer which is not less than \(\log_ p((c+1)/(p-1))\), then, for all \(i\), any product of \(p^{i+k}th\) powers in \(G\) is a \(p^ ith\) power sharpening a result of A. Mann. Examples show that this \(k\) is often the best possible and in any case cannot be reduced by more than 1.
