For the classical Radon transform \({\mathcal R}\) on \({\mathbb R}^n\), \textit{S. Helgason} [Acta Math. 113, 159--180 (1965; Zbl 0163.16602)] derived a characterization of the image of Schwartz space under \({\mathcal R}\) in terms of suitable moment conditions, as well as a support theorem characterizing the Radon transforms of compactly supported Schwartz functions. This paper is concerned with analogous results for the Radon transform \({\mathcal R}^{p,q} : G(p,n) \to G(q,n)\), where \(G(p,n)\) denotes the affine Grassmannian manifold of \(p\)-planes in \({\mathbb R}^n\), and \(q<p\). Under the assumption that \(\dim G(p,n)=\dim G(q,n)\), the authors formulate and prove a characterization of the image of Schwartz functions under \({\mathcal R}^{p,q}\) in terms of moments. They then proceed to prove support theorems, both for the cases \(\dim G(p,n)=\dim G(q,n)\) and \(\dim G(p,n)<\dim G(q,n)\) respectively, which considerably extend the previously known results.
