The author introduce the radial Melnikov potential to study the break-up of resonant invariant curves for perturbations of integrable twist maps. The author applies the theory to the classical and dual billiard maps associated to small perturbations of circular tables. These problems are relevant, since the first-order condition can be stated directly in terms of the Fourier coefficients of the perturbation of the circle, giving rise to a simple sufficient condition for the break-up of resonant curves.
