Let \(X\) be a Banach space and let \(\mathcal B(X)\) be the Banach algebra of bounded operators on \(X\). The author's intention is to study properties of the standard topologies on \(\mathcal B(X)\), that is the norm topology, the weak topology, the strong-, weak\(^\ast\)- and weak operator topologies and the topology of uniform convergence on compact sets. The results in the paper are basically simple corollaries of more general results, well-known to experts in the field. Moreover, the abstract, announcing that new versions of the Eberlein--Smulian theorem are established, misleads the reader since the author's assumptions lead to metrizability.
