The spaces \(\mathcal H_{\mu}\) of test functions for the Hankel transform, introduced by Betancor and the author, are characterized by the symmetric decay condition on a function and on its Hankel transform, and on a function and its derivatives. A similar characterization for the Schwartz space and Gelfand--Shilov spaces in terms of the Fourier transformation was done by the reviewer and coauthors [\textit{J.~Chung, S.--Y.\ Chung} and \textit{D.~Kim}, C.~R.\ Acad.\ Sci., Paris, Sér.~I 316, No.~1, 23--25 (1993; Zbl 0820.46033); Proc.\ Am.\ Math.\ Soc.\ 124, No.~7, 2101--2108 (1996; Zbl 0871.46018)]. Also, this is applied to obtain intrinsic descriptions of the even functions in the Gelfand--Shilov spaces of type \(S\).
