Let \(X, Y\) be Banach spaces and \(R:X\rightarrow Y\) be a continuous operator. \(R\) is called a Radon-Nikodým operator if for every probability space \((\Omega, \Sigma, \mu)\) and every vector measure \(\nu:\Sigma \rightarrow X\) that is \(\mu\)-continuous and has finite variation, the measure \(R \circ \nu\) has a Radon-Nikodým derivative in \(L^1 (\Omega, \Sigma, \mu; \nu, Y)\); i.e., there exists a Bocher integrable function \(g: \Omega \rightarrow Y\) such that \((R \circ \nu) (E) = \int_E g \,d \mu\) for all \(E \in \Sigma\). A useful characterization of Radon-Nikodým operators is given in Theorem 3.4. of the paper under review: If \(X, Y\) are Banach spaces and \(T : X \rightarrow Y\) is continuous, then \(T\) is an Asplund operator if \(T' : Y' \rightarrow X'\) is a Radon-Nikodým operator. Asplund operators can be characterized in terms of operators factoring through \(\ell_\infty\). This is given in Theorem 4.3. See also Theorem 4.5. A Banach lattice \(E\) is said to have property \(P\), if there exists a positive, contractive projection \(P: E'' \rightarrow E\). The main result of the present paper is contained in the following Theorem. Let \(E, F\) be Banach lattices, \(S, R : E \rightarrow F\) be positive operators with \(0 \leq S \leq R\). (i) If \(R\) is a Radon-Nikodým operator, \(F\) has order continuous norm and \(E, F\) both have property \(P\), then \(S\) is also a Radon-Nikodým operator. (ii) If \(R\) is an Asplund operator, \(E'\) has order continuous norm and \(E\) has property \(P\), then \(S\) is an Asplund operator.
