The authors develop a numerical procedure which is based on a sequential quadratic programming optimization algorithm, \(B\)-splines parametrization and the method of fundamental solutions, for detecting the shape of an unknown part of the boundary of the solution domain for the 3D-Laplace equation. The function specification method is employed in order to regularize the problem. The results developed in the present paper show that the proposed algorithm produces accurate results for various shapes of the unknown boundary. The performance and limitations of the algorithm are illustrated by several test examples.
