The authors present a generalization of the work [\textit{J. Gutierrez} and \textit{T. Shaska}, LMS J. Comput. Math. 8, 102--115 (2005; Zbl 1110.14025)] for hyperelliptic curves to cyclic covers of \(\mathbb{P}^1\) of degree \(n\). Let \(k\) be a field of characteristic \(p \geq 0\) and \(C\) be a cyclic cover of \(\mathbb{P}^1\) of degree \(n\) with \((p,n)=1\). They suppose moreover that the automorphism group \(C_n\) of the cover is normal in the automorphism group of the curve. An extra-automorphism is a non-trivial automorphism of order \(\delta | n\) which does not belong to \(C_n\). Two \(n\)-covers will then be equivalent if they are isomorphic and if the isomorphism maps an extra-automorphism onto an extra-automorphism. Under this equivalence notion, the authors construct configuration spaces using dihedral invariants. From this set of invariants, they can also give normal models for cyclic covers with particular automorphism groups.
