The authors obtain several formulas of asymptotic expansions of sums \(S_{n}\) of hypergeometric type. It should be noted that the accuracy of these expansions is very high even for small values of \(n\) and the formulas themselves include only elementary functions. Applications to more elementary sums are given as examples. The suggested method for constructing asymptotic expansions of hypergeometric sums has been implemented in the computer algebra system Maple 9 and the relevant programs are also provided.
