The author constructs the affine crystal graphs of the basic representations of the affine algebras \(A_{2n-1}^{(2)}\) and \(D_{n+1}^{(1)}\) in terms of overpartitions (two-colored partitions where no integer occurs in both colors), explaining the connection between this construction and the previous Young walls approach of \textit{S.-J. Kang} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 86, No. 1, 29--69 (2003; Zbl 1030.17013)]. The author introduces the concepts of core and quotient for these partitions and derives a new combinatorial proof of the character formula for the affine crystal graphs.
