The author investigates a relationship between the covariance algebra defined by B. K. Kawasaki and the crossed product by a partial endomorphism introduced by the author and R. Exel. He shows that the constructions of the covariance algebra and the crossed product by a partial endomorphism are not equivalent by giving examples based on the Cuntz--Krieger algebras.
