The authors prove the following theorem: ``Let \(M\) be a complete space- like hypersurface, with constant mean curvature \(h\), of an \((n+1)\)- dimensional Lorentz space form \(M_ 1^{n+1}(c)\), with sectional curvature \(c\in\mathbb{R}\). If it satisfies one of the following properties: (1) \(c\leq 0\); (2) \(c>0\), \(n\geq 3\) and \(h^ 2\geq 4(n-1)c\); (3) \(c>0\), \(n=2\) and \(h^ 2>4c\), then \(S\leq S_ +(1)\), where \(S\) is the norm of the second fundamental form of \(M\) and \(S_ +(1)\) is a positive constant whose square is defined by \(-nc+[h\{nh+(n-2)D(1)^{1/2}\}/2(n-1)]\), \(D(1)=h^ 2-4(n-1)c\). If the equality holds at a point \(p\), then the second fundamental form \(\alpha\) satisfies at that point, \((\nabla \alpha)(p)=0\)''. As an application of this result a hyperbolic cylinder of a Lorentz space form is characterized as follows: ``The hyperbolic cylinder is the only complete space like hypersurface with non-zero constant mean curvature of \(M_ 1^{n+1}(c)\), whose norm of the second fundamental form is equal to \(S_ +(1)\)''.
