In this paper the authors show that if a gradient shrinking Ricci soliton (shrinker) has an approximate symmetry on one scale, then this approximate symmetry propagates outwards to larger scales. This is an example of the shrinker principle which roughly states that information radiates outwards for shrinking solitons. This kind of propagation of symmetry often plays an important role in understanding the structure of solutions, as well as the rate of convergence of a Ricci flow to a singularity.
