The paper deals with a class of integro-differential equations of the form: \[ D u_{tt}(t) + A u(t) - \int_0^{\infty} g(s) B u(t-s) \,ds + C u_t(t) = 0,\; t\geq 0, \] in a Hilbert space. Here, \(A,B,C,D\) are self-adjoint positive definite operators and the kernel \(g\) is a smooth summable function. Using a semigroup theory approach, the authors study the asymptotic behaviour of the solution to this equation. Under certain hypotheses upon the kernel \(g\), they find a necessary and sufficient condition for the exponential decay to zero of the solution. By using energy estimates, it is shown that in the case of no exponential decay, one can find a polynomial rate decay of the solution. The paper ends with some examples of equations that fit in the class and satisfy the hypotheses.
