    Let \(B(H)\) denote the set of all bounded linear operators on a separable Hilbert space \(H\). An operator \(A\in B(H)\) is said to be in the von Neumann-Schatten class \(C_p\) if \(\| A\|_p=\left(\sum_{i=1}^\infty \langle| A|^p\xi_i,\xi_i\rangle\right)^{1/p}<\infty\), where \(\{x_i\}\) is an orthonormal basis for \(H\). Let \(A, B \in B(H)\), let \(X\) vary such that \(AXB-C \in C_p\), where \(2 \leq p <\infty\). The author generalizes a result of \textit{R.~Penrose} [Proc.\ Camb.\ Philos.\ Soc.\ 52, 17--19 (1956; Zbl 0070.12501)] by proving that \(\| AXB-C\| _p \geq \| AA^+CB^+B-C\| _p\), with equality if and only if \(X=A^+CB^++L-A^+ALBB^+\) for all \(L\in B(H)\) (he indeed proves a more general result). He also shows that the above inequality, in general, does not hold for \(1 \leq p <2\). [For Part I, see \textit{P. J. Maher}, Linear Algebra Appl.\ 174, 99--110 (1992; Zbl 0761.15002).]
