    The aim of this paper is to study the boundedness of the operator \(M_{\alpha}\) in weighted \(L^p\) spaces. The main result is the Theorem: Let \(\alpha\geq-\frac12, 1<p<\infty\), and \(w_{a,b}(x)=| x| ^a(1+| x| )^{b-a}\). Then, there exists a constant \(c\) such that \[ | | M_{\alpha} fw_{a,b}| | _{p,\alpha}\leq c| | fw_{a,b}| | _{p,\alpha} \] if and only if \[ -\frac{2\alpha+2}p<a<(2\alpha+2) \biggl(1-\frac1p\biggr)\quad\text{and} \] \[ \frac{2\alpha+1}2-\frac{2\alpha+2}p<b<\frac{2\alpha+1}2+(2\alpha+2) \biggl(1-\frac1p\biggr). \] As a simple consequence, it is easy to check that in the unweighted case \(a=b=0\), we have \[ | | M_{\alpha}f| | \leq c| | f| | _{p,\alpha}\Leftrightarrow\frac{4(\alpha+1)}{2\alpha+3}<p<\frac{4(\alpha+1)}{2\alpha+1}. \] This result is in contradiction to that of \textit{F. Soltani} [J. Funct. Anal. 209, 16--35 (2004; Zbl 1045.43003)].
