The so-called deep matrix algebras \(\mathcal E(X,A)\) -- here \(A\) is a unital associative algebra and \(X\) is a set -- were introduced and studied by \textit{K. McCrimmon} for the case where \(X\) is infinite [in Non-associative algebra and its applications, Lect. Notes Pure Appl. Math. 246, 261-274 (2006)]. The paper under review considers the case where \(X\) is finite and \(|X|\geq 2\). The simplest situation where \(A=K\) is a field is studied in detail. It is shown that \(\mathcal E(X,K)\) has a unique proper ideal \(I\) isomorphic to \(\text{Mat}_\infty(K)\). Both \(\mathcal E(X,K)\) and \(\mathcal E(X,K)/I\) are shown to have centers isomorphic to \(K\). The automorphisms of \(\mathcal E(X,K)\) are determined.
