The main aim of this paper is to apply the theory of generic initial ideals to the study of geometric consequences hat arise when the Hilbert function of the Artinian reduction of a set of points has certain growth properties. These growth properties are related to the generalized reduction numbers introduced by \textit{L. T. Hoa} and \textit{N. V. Trung} [J. Algebra 270, No. 1, 335--346 (2003; Zbl 1066.13002)]. Instead of the maximal growth of the Hilbert function the authors assume only that the Hilbert function are equal in two consecutive degrees and that the first of these degrees is greater than the second reduction number. Many results on the maximal growth obtained by \textit{A. Bigatti, A. Geramita} and \textit{J. Migliore} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 346, No. 1, 203--235 (1994; Zbl 0820.13019)] continue to hold under this weaker assumption. Moreover, the authors show that a set of points with the Uniform Position Property (or even a general hyperplane section of a smooth curve) does not have the Weak Lefschetz Property as one might expect. They also study the role of the Weak Lefschetz Property in this context, which turns out to be related to the third reduction number.
