    Le compact de Banach-Mazur \(BM(2)\) est l'espace des classes d'isométries des espaces de Banach de dimension deux, avec la distance classique de Banach-Mazur. \(BM_0(2)\) est l'espace obtenu en enlevant de \(BM(2)\) le point correspondant à l'espace euclidien. Soit \(\exp S^1\) l'espace des fermés non vides de \(S^1\) avec la distance de Hausdorff. Le groupe des rotations \(S^1\) opère sur \(\exp S^1\); soit \((\exp S^1)/S^1\) le quotient, et soit \((\exp _0S^1)/S^1\) le sous-ensemble de \((\exp S^1)/S^1\) obtenu en enlevant le point correspondant à \(S^1\). L'auteur donne une condition générale pour qu'un quotient \(X/G\), où \(G\) est un groupe de Lie compact, soit une \(Q\)-variété. Il utilise ce résultat pour montrer que \(BM_0(2)\) et \((\exp _0S^1)/S^1\) sont des \(Q\)-variétés. Comme ces espaces sont \([0,1[\)-stables et ont le même type d'homotopie, ils sont homéomorphes, et leurs compactifications d'Alexandroff \(BM(2)\) et \((\exp S^1)/S^1\) sont aussi homéomorphes.
