The authors study the admissibility of the observation operator \(C\) for the linear Volterra system \[ \dot{x}(t)= Ax(t) + k\ast Ax(t) \;(t\geq 0), \quad x(0)=x_0, \quad y(t)= Cx(t), \] which is clearly equivalent to \[ x(t)= x_0 + (1+1\ast k)\ast Ax(t) \;(t\geq 0), \quad y(t)= Cx(t), \] where \(A\) is the generator of a \(C_0\) semigroup on a Hilbert space \(H\), \(k\in W^{1,2}(0,\infty)\) and \(C\) is a bounded operator from the domain of \(A\) to a Hilbert space \(Y\). By rewriting the Volterra system into an equivalent classical first order Cauchy system, the authors give a finite-time admissibility criterion for the observation operator \(C\) when the output space \(Y\) is finite-dimensional, which extends a known result for the first order Cauchy system. Moreover, examples are given to show the differences between the admissibility criterion and a related result of \textit{M. Jung} [SIAM J. Control Optimization 38, No. 5, 1323--1333 (2000; Zbl 0964.93051)], as well as the differences between Volterra and classical Cauchy semigroup systems with regard to infinite-time admissibility.
