The authors discuss the numerical solution of a system of two coupled, singularly perturbed parabolic partial differential equations modeling for instance saturated flow in fractured porous media. To this end, the asymptotic behavior of the exact solution and its relevant derivatives is estimated by means of decomposition of the solution into a regular and a singular part and a maximum principle. The numerical approximation uses low order finite differences on piecewise equidistant Shishkin meshes especially suited for boundary layers. Convergence in the discrete maximum norm which is uniform in the perturbation parameter is proven and also illustrated by numerical experiments.
