The main purpose of the paper is to establish the characterization of the Hermite heat equation \((\partial_t-\triangle+| x| ^2)U(x,t)=0\) satisfying a growth restriction in terms of distributions on the Mehler kernel. \textit{R. S. Strichartz}' Theorem 3.2 from [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 338, 971--979 (1993; Zbl 0815.35012)] is generalized.
