The author considers the predator-prey system of Gause type \[ dx/dt = h(x) yp(x), dy/dt = y(cp(x) d). \] The main concern of the paper is whether there exist limit cycles for this system. While in classical models, \(p(x)\) is monotonically increasing, the author now treats the case when \(p(x)\) first increases and then decreases, a property that is known as group defense capability of the prey species. In this case, there generally exist two equilibria in the positive quadrant. Several theorems are proved on the nonexistence of limit cycles. A further result also deals with the existence of at least one limit cycle. These results are finally illustrated by two concrete group defense models: The so called dinosaur model and the Newton's serpent model.
