The author gives an explicit characterization of all extensions \(L\) of degree \(p\) for \({\mathbf p}\)-adic fields \(K\). This is obtained by establishing a relation between the coefficients of suitable generating polynomials and exponents of the generators of the norm group \(N_{L/K}(L^*)\). With these results he develops an algorithm for computing class fields of prime power degree \(p^m\). This also provides the means for calculating arbitrary class fields. The paper concludes with a variety of illustrative examples.
