According to the von Neumann--Wold theorem, each Toeplitz operator with \(n+1\)-Blaschke product symbol acting on the Hardy space on the unit circle is unitarily equivalent to \(n+1\) copies of the unilateral shift. The authors develop the Bergman space version of this result. The main result of the paper states that the Toeplitz operator with analytic symbol \(B(z)\) acting on the Bergman space on the unit disk is similar to \(n+1\) copies of the Bergman shift if and only if \(B(z)\) is an \(n+1\)-Blaschke product.
