The degree of an ample line bundle \(L\) on an abelian variety \(A\) of dimension \(g\) is defined as \(d=h^0(A,L)\). This article concerns the singularities of divisors \(D\in | L| \) when \(d\) is small. When \(d=1\) (i.e. when \(L\) defines a ``principal polarization''), \textit{G. Kempf} [Ann. Math. (2) 98, 178--185 (1973; Zbl 0275.14023)] showed that \(D\) has only rational singularities if \(A\) is a Jacobian. Without the restriction that \(A\) is a Jacobian, \textit{J. Kollár} [Shafarevich maps and automorphic forms. (Princeton), NJ: Princeton University Press. (1995; Zbl 0871.14015)] showed that \((A,D)\) is log canonical, and \textit{L. Ein} and \textit{R. Lazarsfeld} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 10, No. 1, 243--258 (1997; Zbl 0901.14028)] showed that if \(D\) is irreducible then it is normal and has rational singularities. In this article the cases when (i) \(A\) is simple and \(g>(d+1)^2/4\), and when (ii) \((A,L)\) is indecomposable and \(d=2\) are considered. Other results are mentioned for cases with \(d\leq 5\) but proofs are skipped due to the technical nature. In the case (i) it is showed for example that every \(D\in | L| \) is prime, normal and has rational singularities and, that the set of points of multiplicity \(\geq mk\) on a divisor \(D\in | mL| \) (with \(k\geq 2\), \(m>0\)) has codimension \(>k\) in \(A\). It is conjectured that the same conclusions hold under the weaker assumption that \(g>d\). A more precise result is obtained for the case (ii).
